Soccer the Brazilian Way (STBW) offers Speed Program to increase players acceleration and speed over a short distance. (10 – 50 yards), which is most important for a soccer player.

What is Speed ?

Speed is an integral part of every sport and can be expressed as any one of, or combination of, the following:

- Maximum speed
- Elastic Strength
- Speed Endurance

To Achieve the development of speed we should ensure that:

- Flexibility is developed and maintained all year round.
- Strength and speed is developed in parallel.
- Skill development (technique) is pre-learned, rehearsed and perfected before it is done at high-speeds.
- Speed training is performed by using high velocity for brief intervals.. This will ultimately bring into play the correct neuromuscular pathways and energy sources used.

In order to achieve total fitness and speed we concentrate on nine elements during our training: (The following lists the elements and an example of how they are used in soccer).

1) Strength: The extent to which muscles can exert force by contracting against resistance.

Example: holding or restraining the ball or a player

2) Power: the ability to exert maximum muscular contraction instantly in an explosive burst of movements

Example: jumping or sprinting towards a ball or an open space.

3) Agility: performing a series of explosive power movements in rapid succession in opposing directions

Example: Zigzag running or cutting movements with or without the ball

4) Balance: ability to control the body’s position, either stationary or while moving.

Example: Perfect balance is attained when you can kick the ball at any angle at the target while running or in a standing position in the soccer field.

5) Flexibility: ability to achieve an extended range of motion without being impeded by excess tissue, ( fat or muscle ).

Example : Executing all stretching exercises

6) Local Muscle Endurance: a single muscle’s ability to perform sustained work

Example: Kicking the ball while running at the same speed the entire game is a good measure of the endurance of the muscle.

7) Cardiovascular Endurance: the heart’s ability to deliver blood to working muscles and their ability to use it

Example: Running the entire soccer game at the same speed at all times.

8) Strength Endurance: a muscle’s ability to perform a maximum contracture time after time.

Example: Continuous explosive runs and kicks through an entire soccer game.

9) Coordination: The ability to integrate the above listed components so that effective movements are achieved.
